Why dog insurance is not an unnecessary luxury
As a dog owner, you naturally want the very best for your dog. You provide good nutrition, sufficient exercise, and a warm bed. But what if your dog suddenly falls ill or has an accident? Veterinary costs can quickly add up. Dog insurance can save you a lot of money and worry in such cases.
Dog insurance is primarily a financial buffer and provides peace of mind. If you are willing to bear unexpected costs yourself, you can also opt for a “personal savings fund”. But for many owners, insurance is the most carefree solution.
How much does a visit to the vet cost?
For a simple check-up or vaccination, you will easily spend €40 to €70. But in the case of an acute illness, surgery, or emergency, costs can quickly rise towards €1,000 to €2,000. Consider:
X-rays or ultrasound: €100 - €300
Surgery (for example on hips or stomach): €500 - €2,000
Medication or physiotherapy: a few hundred euros
Without insurance, you have to cough up this amount all at once.
What does dog insurance cover?
Dog insurance works just like health insurance for people. You pay a monthly premium and in return, medical costs are (partially) reimbursed. Depending on the provider and the package, insurance covers:
Consultations and treatments at the veterinarian
Operations and hospitalization
Medication and vaccinations
Dental care (sometimes optional)
Physiotherapy and behavioral therapy
Neutering/spaying (optional)
Alternative medicine (e.g. acupuncture)
Please note: there are always exclusions, waiting times, and personal contributions. Therefore, read the terms and conditions carefully.
Comparing pays off
Not every insurance policy is the same. Compare carefully based on:
Premium : usually between €10 – €50 per month, depending on breed and age.
Deductible : percentage or fixed amount per claim.
Maximum reimbursement per year.
Coverage for supplementary care (dental, behavioral, alternative therapies).
Popular insurers in the Netherlands include:
Petplan
OHRA Pet Insurance
InShared
Figo
Univé Pet & Care
When to close?
The younger your dog, the cheaper the premium. Many insurers do not accept new dogs above a certain age (usually around 6-7 years). So don't wait too long. Existing conditions are also usually excluded, so starting early is smart.
